Medicaid Perinatal Risk Tool (MPRT)

The Medicaid Perinatal Risk Tool is a web application that houses a suite of infant mortality and maternal health tools:

Preterm Birth Risk Calculator (Risk Calculator)

This tool is intended to be used by healthcare providers, presenting them with an estimated risk of preterm birth at different stages of the patient's pregnancy that is calculated using data that is specific to Ohio populations (first, second, and third trimesters). In addition, healthcare providers can use the data visualizations developed from the calculator for shared decision making or to guide conversations with their patients. The Risk Calculator uses the patient's Medical Record Number (MRN) to collect demographic and medical history data from Epic and then parses that information to populate the calculator. The provider will be prompted to complete any missing information manually. When all required data is provided, the Risk Calculator applies statistical models developed using data from the Ohio Departments of Medicaid and Health to estimate the probability of pre-term birth for an individual patient and illustrates the risk graphically to facilitate identifying and managing the risk.

EHR-connected Perinatal Risk Assessment Form (PRAF-EHR)

Currently, many providers submit a PRAF by manually entering information into the online Electronic Perinatal Risk Assessment Form (EPRAF) via the NurtureOhio website.

The PRAF-EHR obtains information from the patient's medical record and then automates transmission of that information into the NurtureOhio EPRAF form, significantly reducing the time it takes to complete a PRAF.

Coming Soon: Severe Maternal Morbidity Risk Calculator (SMM-RC)

Starting at 32 weeks gestation, the provider will also have the option of using the SMM risk calculator within the same MPRT tool. The SMM risk calculator includes 2 models. The first estimates the probability of severe maternal morbidity during the labor and delivery admission and can be used at 32 weeks gestation through the day of hospital admission. The second is intended to be used during hospital admission and estimates the probability of SMM in the postpartum time period, after discharge and up to 42 days post-partum. These SMM models were similarly developed using data from the Ohio Departments of Medicaid and Health. The SMM risk calculator is intended to facilitate identification of patients with increased risk for SMM.

The calculators do not save or store data. The Medicaid Perinatal Risk Tool does automate submitting information to NurtureOhio, reducing the manual data entry burden when providers attempt to complete the Medicaid Pregnancy Risk Assessment Form (PRAF)

The Medicaid Perinatal Risk Tool was developed by the Infant Mortality Research Partnership (IMRP), a project sponsored by the Ohio Departments of Medicaid, Higher Education, and Health. Project partners include the Ohio Colleges of Medicine Government Resource Center (GRC), led by project Principal Investigator (PI) Dr. Gil Liu, and The Ohio State University (OSU) Wexner Medical Center, led by PI Dr. Courtney Hebert. The OSU College of Medicine Department of Research Information Technology (RIT) develops, maintains, and runs the application.
